Y'all, I don't know how I lived without historical romance for so long because I am in love. This was my first hist rom set in England with a rake and a bookish heroine. Their relationship is based on teasing, underlying hostility, and apparent hate. But of course, that is so not the case. Colin, a restless viscount, and Minerva, a 'hopeless' bookworm, are each witty and clever and too smart for their own good most of the time but I loved reading about their journey. Minerva kinda, sorta but never really does convince Colin to escort her to Scotlan for a geology symposium because Minerva loves rocks. Their journey is...a disaster at best, a catastrophe at worst. The meat of our story comes from the misadventures of trying to get to Scotland so Minerva can present ground-breaking evidence of a fossil she discovered. See? Smart chica.
While Minerva is determined to get to Scotland at any cost, reputation, future, marriageability, Colin tries his best to dissuade her. He begrudgingly looks out for her even when she is stubborn and unmoving about her decision. What they encounter along the way would deter anyone...except Miranda. The people they meet and the situations they find themselves in are hilarious! So ridiculous you can't help but laugh. I loved it. And their banter?! It was the veiled hostility and sarcastic teasing that won me over. They are both so witty and funny with their comebacks and the sexy time?! Whoa! 5 alarm fire over here! I never thought a scen involving dry humping could be so fucking hot. Wow.
But more than the laughter, there is so much more to Colin than what meets the eye. He has some personal demons to work through and I thought this was the perfect amount of emotional angst for this book. It brought healing and emotion and I thought that how he learned to rely on Minerva and open up to her was just perfect. They needed each other, they wanted each other, and they relied on each other to be the strength when they themselves ran out of it. They were a perfect balance to one another and I loved their relationship. This was a definite win with my first English historical romance and I cannot wait to read more, especially from this series!

ReplyDeleteI think I only started reading historical fiction this year but I really need to get on to reading historical romances, everyone keeps recommending Tessa Dare your review made me want to read it even more!
