I'm not gonna lie. For the longest time I really had no interest in this series. I am very anti-celebrity, royalty, anything having to do with being famous. I don't like reading about. I don't care. I don't like the theme of 'he's a prince or he's a famous actor what's he doing with me' because it's all bullshit to me. Nobody is better than anybody else and because of my opinion on that, I stay away from royalty and celebrity-based romances. HOWEVER. If something comes highly recommended enough by a very trusted friend, I'll usually at least give it a college try. When I saw these on my library's Overdrive for audio, I thought I'd give it a try...and I am so glad I did!

Keeping It Interesting
My Thoughts
The Belle
Sophie Kinsella has slowly but surely become one of my go-to authors for fun and light-hearted but not superficial read. Her stories have lovely themes, fantastic heroines, and more than enough humor to go around. Her newest book Surprise Me fit this bill.

My Thoughts
The Belle
This being my first Hazel Gaynor novel, I didn't know what to expect. But when I started reading the prologue I knew I was in for a captivating story of fairies, magic, and growing up. This story is a dual timeline with the past component taking place from 1917-1920 and is about an actual historical event known as the Cottingley Fairies when two young girls seemed to capture real fairies while playing in the beck behind their house. The present day story is about a woman who inherits her grandfather's bookshop after his death and finds one of the little girl's from 1917 story about those events.

Hot Cross Buns

My Thoughts
The Belle
Anybody that knows me knows I am beyond obsessed with Anne Boleyn. So when I found out Alison Weir, a favorite author of mine in regards to historical fiction and non-fiction Tudor books, I knew I had to read it. The second of six in a series exploring Henry VIII's six wives, I found this book to be everything I was hoping for.

When I got the pitch for this book, I was immediately intrigued. You can sell almost any book to me with the words destination romance or travel romance or takes place in ________. I love stories that take place in other countries, especially romances. I can relate to them *ahem* and I always like to see how a happily ever can play out in a beautiful location.

Beyond the Highland Mist & To Tame a Highland Warrior & The Highlander's Touch & Kiss of the Highlander & The Dark Highlander
I finally continued on with my Highlanders and I was SO happy to be back in this world. The Immortal Highlander is the story most readers, including myself, have been waiting for for quite awhile. Adam Black, the immortal Fae who loves to stir up trouble, is total. And falling in love. With a human. And she's the only one who can see him. It's freaking fantastic. Gabrielle is a sidhe-seer so she can see the Fae. When Adam realizes this and goes to her for help, she punches him in the face. It's fucking amazing. She's grown up avoiding them and has been taught to stay away from them by any means necessary, so obvi she doesn't trust him. Adam is smitten. Duh. There tete-a-tete is amazing. The quote at the top is one he says to her on the reg. He's charming but soulless and therein lies the problem. For Gabrielle, it has been ingrained into her that they are soulless shells and it takes her awhile to realize he's anything but soulless. After the disappointment that was The Dark Highlander for me, this book brought me right back to life and it was so romantic. I was super emotional at the end and couldn't help but shed a few tears. My heart, you guys, my heart.

Quick and Dirty // Mini-Reviews {3}
There's been a handful of books I've read lately that I haven't reviewed fully but still wanted to give them their just due. This group of mini-reviews are a few historical romances I've read and really enjoyed lately.
Overall I loved the story and the dynamic between Alex and Lily but I was shocked at how the intimacy happened between these two characters. It was...kinda skeevy and I just felt icky about it. It...wasn't good. I mean, at the end of the encounter it was good and I understood the general point of what Kleypas was going for but how the characters got there just didn't sit well with me. So much so I knocked off a whole star for it but don't let that deter you from reading. It's still a great story, I loved the dynamic between Lily and Alex. He is a total alpha if not for a little bit of an asshole but just what Lily needed and just what he needed. Their hate-to-love dynamic was a lot more hate but it just was even better when the sparks started flying.

SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS BOOKS AHEAD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
The end is here! I am so sad to see Jim and Adrian and co. go! *sniff* This final book I had no expectations as to what was going to happen. We follow Jim and Adrian and Sissy as they try to figure out what to do about the next soul. Along the way they stumble and fall…multiple times…but it is truly how they get back up…and how they love one another. I LOVE the dynamic between all of them and how much they truly protect and love one another. It really is all about love.

Show Me Your Milk Can
"Everybody has a story."
--Alice Clayton, Cream of the Crop
The Hudson Valley series has become one of my most pleasant surprise series. Nuts was a surprise favorite romance of last year and I've been eagerly anticipating Cream of the Crop especially after meeting the hero in Nuts who is a big, tall, broody farmer. The Wisconsin girl in me swooned hard these boys.

The Belle
This latest book in one of my favorite series, Kit Rocha brings it. War is coming and the battles have begun. Picking up where Beyond Ruin left off, my favorite part of this series as if recent has been the ongoing tension between Eden and the Sectors, especially our beloved 4. I loved the continuing plot of the war against Eden. THINGS happen and I was so completely engaged in this story that I could feel my heart racing. I have a thing for books and storylines when the characters are plotting war or rising up against an oppressor. Turns me on. This was no exception.

We all know how much I am obsessed with the Tudor era. While this book is not about Anne Boleyn, it does feature my fourth favorite historical lady--yes, I rank them, got a problem with that? And FYI being number four is quite high--and I could not have been more excited when I found out these lovely authors were going to rewrite her story. After Anne Boleyn, she is the lady I most need to have a different ending to her historical story. These authors did just that.

Ok, this kinda really sucks to write because so far this has been the weakest book in the series. I was so excited to get back into the story, especially with how the previous book ended and Jim bartering for Sissy’s soul. However, the ramifications from there weren’t anything to write home about.
While I still really enjoyed the book overall, I couldn’t help but notice the complete lack of integration between Jim and the soul in question. We had Cait and GB and Duke in one corner and Jim and Sissy and Adrian in the other. NOTHING happened between the two parties—ok, barely anything—and it sucked! I was so annoyed with Jim in this because hello! World to save! Ring a bell? And while I’m totally a sucker for the ‘I will sacrifice all to save my true love’ bit, I just still do NOT buy the love, if you can even call it that, between Jim and Sissy. It actually makes me a little uneasy in that she is 19 and he’s close to 40. I’m not an ageist but when he constantly harps on how young and innocent he is, I get creeped out. Plus, the name? Sissy? Awful. You’re better than this, JR.
On a good note though, I loved the dynamic between Duke and Cait. Duke is gruff, communicates in few words, and doesn’t really make an effort with anybody. Y’all know how I love me some broody heroes and he is the definition of it. Also add in a musician who is dreamy and we have ourselves a little bit of a situation. But really not at the same time because it is quite clear very early on who Cait wants and I actually like triangels where there is one poor loser who just doesn’t stand a chance. Call me evil.
I feel like this series is amazing and while this book is definitely it’s weak link, it still gives us good plot progression and things to think about with the final book. Uh, Nigel, anyone?! What the F?! Cannot wait to see how this series concludes and it makes me so sad a conclusion to a series by a favorite author is on the horizon.

Goodreads Description
The last thing Vaughan Hewson expects to find when he returns to his childhood home is a broken hearted bride in his shower, let alone the drama and chaos that comes with her.
Lydia Green doesn't know whether to burn down the church or sit and cry in a corner. Discovering the love of your life is having an affair on your wedding day is bad enough. Finding out it's with his best man is another thing all together. She narrowly escapes tying the knot and meets Vaughan only hours later.
Vaughan is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessman she thought she'd marry. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and unsettled. But she already tried Mr. Right and discovered he's all wrong-maybe it's time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.
After all, what's wrong with getting dirty?

When Dirty showed up in my mail I was super excited. I hadn't read any Kylie Scott prior to this but I had heard good things about her Stage Dive series so I--heh heh--dove right in...see what I did there? I was almost immediately engaged and invested in the story. Lydia is a runaway bride for *ahem* reasons and ends up breaking into Vaughn's house sitting in his shower in her misery. I loved Lydia immediately. She really drove the story for me and kept me reading. I loved her. I loved her fire, her sass, her one-liners, her ability to care deeply about near strangers, and her vulnerability. Her insecurities about her body felt real without being the sole focus of her thoughts. She was a legitimate plus-size girl and those are my favorite. I'm not body shaming on either spectrum but it's nice to read about a heroine with lumps and soft spots and not "size 12 plus size" because that is not plus size, that's normal/average. Anyways. Lydia was the bomb dot com and her creative use of vocabulary was the actual best. "Devil dick and demon tongue'. That is all.
The romance and chemistry between Lydia and Vaughn was pretty immediate but not in an overtly annoying insta-love way. They were attracted to each other and while the course of the book is only 2 weeks, it didn't feel rushed. And while it is crazy how their circumstances started and how short of time they know each other, it didn't bother me. Their calling each other out on their bullshit was my favorite part of their courtship. They gave it to each other straight and helped force each other to face their problems.
More than just the focused romance, the secondary characters were fantastic. I loooooved meeting the rest of the crew, Nell, Pat, Joe, Eric, Rosie and Andre. In addition to their amazing characterization, they own and work at a restaurant and I after knowing that I was 100% invested in this world. I love reading about cooking and chefs and restaurants and the industry. It's so out of my zone of what I do for work that I can't get enough reading about it. I am so excited to read the future books that I wish I had them in my hands right now! I'm super excited for Joe and I cannot wait to see how things evolve for other characters because...reasons. Read the book, you'll know what I mean.

I had never previously read an Alice Clayton book prior to this and when it showed up in my mailbox from the lovelies at Gallery, I was really excited! The synopsis sounded great. I LOVE reading books about chefs and cooking and then add in a hot farmer, SOLD!
The Setting
A small town in the Hudson Valley is where our story takes place. After basically being thrown from LA, Roxie is asked by her mother to come home to manage the diner while she's away. It's perfect timing after losing her job in LA so she reluctantly goes back home. I loved the small town vibe. When she was talking about her difficult high school experience I did feel like I was starting to get hives and itch a little bit because I also come from a small town--not small compared to some but still small--and I could feel the anxiety of having to see people you purposely and gladly left behind. Beyond that, the feeling of coming home, of being surrounded by familiarity, the sense of belonging, I loved it.
The Diner/The Farm
The more specific setting of the diner also had me smiling. I loved the fast-paced, high intensity of Roxie working at the diner. Her trying to find her niche and try out new things was super fun to read about because I love reading about people cooking. And then the farm and Leo were fantastic. I loved how Alice Clayton weaved in farm to table living, CSAs, and how to support local agriculture. If I wasn't a fucking gypsy I would love to look into doing this and supporting local farmers. One day...
The Romance
This wasn't a conventional romance. Roxie doesn't open up to people and her "relationships" are always of a short term and sexual as needed nature. So her and Leo get on things very quickly, especially because he knows she is only here for the summer. Well, they actually finally get it on quite late in the book but the sexual tension and courtship starts pretty quickly. I really enjoyed their banter and food innuendos. I was laughing out loud more than once.
Finding A Reason To Stay
The entire book Roxie is convinced she will move back to LA to continue on with her 'real life.' When she meets Leo and gets to know him, she starts to question that plan. I loved this so much. She had zero expectation when she came home, didn't want to be there, and ended up wanting to stay because of love. *le sigh* As I said, as a gypsy looking for my stopping place, I so appreciated this aspect of the story. Did Roxie find her stopping place?...You'll have to read to find out.

The Secret
There is a secret about one of the characters that drives a portion of the conflict later in the story and I have to call a little bullshit on this. In a town that small, that thrives so much on gossip, there is NO WAY this would have been kept a secret especially when it wasn't a town secret. This character chose to keep it from the other character but not from everyone else. It just didn't feel realistic. The conflict that arose from it felt organic but now how the conflict came about. It really did not affect my overall feeling for the book or rating, I still totally enjoyed the book but this made me head tilt.
