Because Hannah and I are freaks of nature and essentially tied in our Bookish March Madness bracket this year, we both chose a book the other person had to read. Her choice for me was IF I’M BEING HONEST by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka because YA Contemporary and I don’t usually vibe. But when Hannah recs a book in this lesser read genre by me, I know it’s gonna be good…and it was! She pitched it to as a retelling of The Taming of the Shrew with 10 Things I Hate About You vibes—she had me at hello, that’s one of my favorite movies ever. Plus as somebody who is sometimes described as too blunt and honest, I feel for this type of character.
I loved this book from the opening scene of Cameron telling another girl she was being stupid for not seeing through a teenage boy’s stupid antics. Harsh? Yes. Helpful? Also, yes. Cameron struggles when her crush of a year hears her being not nice to a different girl and, inspired by reading The Taming of the Shrew, decides she wants to make amends so the boy will like her. I loved Cameron. I really loved her thoughtful discovery that being kind doesn’t mean she also is changing who she is at the expense.
The romance that Cameron has had me swooning from the start! Shy nerd boy? Uh duh. Another favorite Rom Com Can’t Buy Me Love also makes an appearance and I was here.for.it. The friendships in this book also were so dynamic. The different personalities all fit together so well and I thought the teenage antics with Rocky Horror Picture Show was just a cherry on top of the sundae—also Perks of Being a Wallflower feelings. This book was so fun to read, easy to listen to, I wanted to keep finding cleaning to do so I could keep listening. I felt like this book was the perfect ode to so many Rom Coms without feeling like any sort of copy cat. I just loved it so, so much!
Read this if you’re looking for a fun escape into a tale of old!
