review: Always the last to know

I have read and loved every single one of Kristan Higgins’ books and that collection of work is not short. ALWAYS THE LAST TO KNOW started off rough for me. There are three main characters, Sadie, her sister Juliet, and their mom Barb. I reeeeeally struggled with empathizing with Juliet and Barb. They seemed harsh, not compassionate, and clueless to the blessing of their lives. If you know me, you’ll know one of my life pet peeves is people who have zero self-awareness. These two lacked it in spades.

However, I should have known Higgins would turn it around. What I love about reading is getting into the mind of everyday people and how we never know what their story is, their history, their perspective, but getting to know and understand them and carry that into our everyday life. This story turned into a book about forgiveness, complicated family dynamics, the importance of friendship, and the meaning of the word home.

I truly ended up being very understanding of all the characters (Sadie who I liked in the beginning became the most annoying LOL) and loved how Higgins brought dimension and compassion to a set of characters I was almost determined not to like. But isn’t that the point of understanding and human nature?
