"“On the darkest days you have to search for a spot of brightness,
on the coldest days you have to seek out a spot of warmth;
on the bleakest days you have to keep your eyes onward and upward
and on the saddest days you have to leave them open to let them cry.
To then let them dry.
To give them a chance to wash out the pain
in order to see fresh and clear once again.”

My Thoughts
Oh...my...gosh...this is gonna be a struggle. I have oh so many feelings about this book. This book...this book reminds of the reason I absolutely adore reading. The emotions. The agony. The sense of urgency. The idea that there are things and people in this world to fight for that are greater than our individual self. This book was poetry. Tahereh Mafi is so freakin' talented that I cannot even BEGIN to talk about...but I'll try...
The writing. Again. Just breathtaking. The words are so passionate and powerful and written in such a way that Juliette's inner monologue is one long soliloquy of poetry. The emotions that she is able to pull out of the reader while writing is nothing short of brilliant. The unique style of formatting the text with breaks, one word lines, and repetitive phrases, again, brought so much more to the feel of the story. I believe the emotional draw is that much better due to the unique style of writing. You can really feel and understand the mind of Juliette and how she processes and thinks about the situations and world around her.
Juliette continues to be mentally fractured, completely unsure of how to interact with other humans properly. My heart was breaking for her. There were so many quotes (that will be highlighted in post tomorrow or the next day) that I just felt like I could relate to so much. I understand what it feels like to be so lonely and to want a companion and to just hope and hope and hope beyond hope that things will change for the better. While she was whiny for no reason a lot of the time and that irritated the heck out of me, some of her inner thoughts just hit me like a brick in the face. I get it. I get her. I'm not sure how crazy that makes me sound but we all have our own problems, right? My complaint with her character in this installment? She took way too long to snap out of her self-pity and misery. There is a heck of a lot of crap going on that does not involve her personal life. Girlfriend needed to wise up, snap out of it, and embrace the kickass X-Men-esque superhero she is. Damn, I'm with Kenji 100% on everything he said to her. He had it right the whole book.
Adam. *sigh* This boy breaks my heart. Breaks it right in half and keeps me wanting more. I looooooved Adam in Shatter Me and I wanted to stay on his team, REALLY I did. He is perfection in Shatter Me...Unravel Me?...He's kind of a whiner. Like I get you're going through a lot and so much other stuff happens that totally justifies some of your moodiness but for the most part, man up bro. Put your big boy pants on and be a man. Don't get me wrong, I adore Adam, I'm hoping a bit he turns things around but there is this other variable that I'm kind of enchanted by...
...Warner. Wow. Shatter ME Warner...total ass hat. Destroy Me...crushing hardcore. Unravel Me...fell in love. I'm sorry that I'm not more sorry. (IF YOU HAVE NOT READ DESTROY ME SPOILERS AHEAD) Destroy Me completely humanized the villain that Warner is in Shatter Me. We see his justifications and how not everything was as it seems. Unravel Me continues to echo how broken and tortured he is. I just really like him. Like Juliette I cannot explain it except the characterization of him makes him completely endearing to me. I want to wrap him up and keep him away from anyone else that may hurt him. I think he can be redeemed and be a better person. And I love how she feels so comfortable with him. I can totally see where she would hide some of herself from Adam in fear of scaring him away (even though we all know that won't happen because Adam is just so adorably devoted to her). With Warner she can truly be herself. And while I love Adam and will be happy with whoever she ends up with, I think it says a lot that she can really open up to him. There's a quote I was thought of while discussing this book with my fabulous friends and it goes like this, "If you are in love with two people, choose the second because if you were in love with the first, you never would have fallen for the second." I don't know who said that but it is so.true. I believe if you find your one and only you will never be looking for anybody else. If she can have feelings like this for Warner...maybe what she thought her and Adam had wasn't as deep as she first thought. I'm just saying! I cannot wait to see what happens in the third and final book. Oh yeah, and Chapter 62...um....yeah...about that...I'm pretty sure I broke out into a cold sweat and needed a cold shower desperately. That.Is.All.
The whole idea of forgiveness and redemption is beautiful in this book. Warner's situation is the perfect example of this. Can he evolve from the monster he used to be into someone better? We shall see...but I think he's on the right track :) Like every great dystopian we have a rebellion fighting against oppression. Unravel Me gives us the sense of urgency and impending doom of their situation and the world that they now live in that Shatter Me didn't. We now see what the world has been reduced to and how it needs to change. I loved seeing the story move towards the political aspect of the world at large.
This book was a freakin' roller coaster. I could NOT put this book down. There were so many OH MY GOSH moments and jaw drops I think I may have fractured it. I did not see SO many of the plot twists coming and it was just freakin' incredible! OH MY GOSH AND WE FIND OUT WARNER'S NAME?!?! ERMAGOSH!!! Sorry, so yeah, I started the book on Tuesday at 8 pm, I had a work meeting the next day at 10 am, and I stayed up until 3 am to finish the whole book because I knew, I knew, I would NOT be able to sit through that work meeting not having finished this book. It would have distracted me. That's how good this book was. Oh my word, where is book 3? I'd consider amputating a toe to get a copy in my hands today. Cannot WAIT to see where this story goes!

Right ok this review settles it. I need to read this series soon.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW REALLY!!! I felt the same way, I was so mad at everyone for wanting team Warner and now I find myself there too! I love your review. I like the statement on choosing too!!
ReplyDeleteI have no words other than..... PREACH IT GIRL, PREACH IT!!!
ReplyDeleteNooooo we've lost another person to Team Warner. Haha, just kidding. You can have him! I love your reaction to chapter 62. I loved that chapter. It was...intense lol. I thought the writing was once again breathtaking as well. Mafi is just...she's a fantastic writer and I hope she writes for many years to come because I adore her style.
ReplyDelete"If you are in love with two people, choose the second because if you were in love with the first, you never would have fallen for the second." ----> I love this quote! I've never heard it before but I do think it's applicable here. When I read Shatter Me, I was all about Adam and Juliette but like you, once I read Unravel Me I jumped ship. There's just something so complex about Warner and I love how Juliette feels completely comfortable with him. But I still like Adam too.. I just wasn't crazy about his portrayal in this book. I'm definitely curious to see where the author takes these relationships in the next book :) Awesome review!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great review! Now I'm even more anxious to finally read this. I NEED to know what this whole chapter 62 thing is about!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
ReplyDeleteThis is not acceptable. This is not okay. I do not this Warner love. DOES. NOT. COMPUTE.
I meant - "I do not like this Warner love."
DeleteMy anger is making me leave out words. Struggggggllllleeeee.
