Top Ten Words/Topics That Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book

We all love to read...we know this. But this week's TTT hosted by The Broke and the Bookish talks about what makes us NOT want to read. What topics or words make you put the book back on the shelf halfway through the synopsis? I am uber excited to see what y'all choose!!

1. Zombies--This just isn't my thing. I don't know why. They don't interest me. They kinda creep me out. It is an element of paranormal that I just don't get into. BUT I will be reading Something Strange and Deadly...so stay tuned because I have a feeling I might be putting my foot in my mouth--again--after reading.

2. Ghosts--Again, see above. Not my thing. I don't believe in all they hype of ghosts and haunted places in real life so it is not something I want to take the time to read about.

3. Road Trips--Doesn't interest me. I dislike driving so why do I want to read about it?

4. Bullying--This topic just hits too close to home for me. There are a lot of books that include mean characters and those make me so irrationally angry, I just cannot read an entire book about bullying. My heart and mind can't take it.

5. High School/Contemporary--This one and the next few come with disclaimers. I LOVE several contemporaries and place them as some of my all-time favorite books. However, if the book is solely about a character that happens to be young adult and their journey involves only high school related everyday issues, I am so not interested. My formula for the contemporaries and high school scenarios I obsess over have to include some sort of emotionally damaged character or some sort of terrible situation. Sounds harsh, but it's true. i.e-The Sea of Tranquility, Pushing the Limits, Hopeless...see the idea?

6. Werewolves--Sorry to sound redundant...not my thing. I love paranormal but on their own, these guys don't get my reading engine revving.

7. Vampires--I know, I KNOW! Disclaimer again! As a rule, I don't do vampires...I don't. While some of my FAVORITE books AND book boyfriends include and are vampires, if I am reading a synopsis and the word vampire is included...I will put it down. It's gotta be good or come highly recommended.

8. Angels--Again, read above but insert angels. I LOVE angels. I am so protective and picky about the books involving them that they have to be done excellently or I will not read it. Unearthly and Daughter of Smoke and Bone are the standard of angels. Again, if I see angels are involved and I've never heard of the book, I probably won't read it...unless it comes recommended :)

9. Pets/Animals--I've never had pets. I don't ever really want pets. While I love animals and am totally for wildlife foundations, etc. I just don't like pets. I can't connect with the emotions that go along with owning a domesticated animal. Thus, this topic is one I stay away from.

10. The phrase, 'For fans of Twilight'-- ...can I just say Stephanie Meyer and call it a day?......Sorry not sorry...not my style. And yes I have TRIED to read The Host. Woof.

  1. Ghosts: Read Anna Dressed In Blood- Just do it. I'll even record another Shoop video for you if you do.
Road Trips: One road trip with me and that's ALL you'll ever want to do for the rest of your life.
Vampires: You didn't just say that. Between VA and BDB that statement should be illegal.
    Pets: bahahahaa
"For the Fans of"--- too funny.... that was on my list too!

I heart you so much! <3

  2. Zombies: boo. I just don't get that one. And oops: I just fell in love with Sea of Tranquility :)) I said something similar on my post about 'mean girl' books and referenced Pretty Little Liars. Blech!

  3. I don't do werewolves, angels, demons, vampires, or any other made up characters.

  4. Ghosts are on my list too! Great list and great reasoning!

  5. hahaha I really enjoy zombie and ghost books. Not a huge fan of werewolf novels though! And I definitely agree regarding angels... not a big fan of those and especially when it's christian fiction.

  6. The only angel books I enjoy are the Daughter of Smoke and Bone books. But with others, it's just too close to religion for me, and that's just not something I'm interested in reading.

I haven't read a single book about a road trip! It's not that I'm not interested, it's just that every book about a road trip that I've come across so far has sounded boring.

  7. I can't do angels at all. Zombies I can read in a horror context, but through in romance and I'm out. dead, rotting flesh just not sexy in my book.

  8. Oh my goodness, definitely no on the zombie and angel fronts. I just can't! I almost added a "The next..." bit in my post, but I didn't get to it. Excellent list. Thanks for sharing!

  9. I agree you with the angels! I also love the whole angel mythology, if it's not "religious" per se. I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to angel books, because I don't want them to be ruined for me. :) A really nice list!

  10. I love that more than one person has "For fans of Twilight..." on there list. It's making me giggle. Great list.

  11. I'm 100% with you on the pet thing... I actually cringe when I hear about heart warming tales about a man and his dog. Ick.

  12. I totally agree with #4 & #5. I really have trouble reading about realistic situations because it makes me uncomfortable. Check out my TTT!

  13. I don't really believe in ghosts, or haunted places, but I have to say that I am such a sucker for ghost stories. I love them!

I'm not a vampire person either, and she have definitely included this in my TTT.

And I'm so glad to know someone else doesn't care for road trip books. I don't know why, but I just don't like them. And I do like driving and road trips. Just not to read about them.

  14. I'm in total agreement with you when it comes to zombies. I've never been able to understand their appeal. They just seem boring and silly! While there are some exceptions (I adored Susan Dennard's Something Strange and Deadly and Carrie Ryan's The Forest of Hands and Teeth) for the most part I avoid all things having to do with zombies like the plague!

  15. I just started reading books with zombies in them (thank you Walking Dead) and I'm fascinating by ghosts, but I agree with most of the rest of your list!

  16. Ghosts. AGREED. I hate the new trend I've found with killing off the guy who I thought the MC would end up with and making him a ghost. (Or at least new to me) Really?! ~Kristina

  17. I agree with the "For Fans of". I forgot it on my list but that's a good one.

  18. I love the idea of ghosts. When I was younger, I devoured any tale about hauntings because I wanted them to be true so badly. I'm still like ghosts today, I just don't read about them anymore. And I never used to think I'd be into zombies...until my boyfriend lent me his copy of World War Z. That book was incredible. And now I really want to read Warm Bodies after liking the movie.

  19. "For Fans of" is a big one for me. Especially with Twilight, and I didn't even MIND Twilight when I read it. Road trips aren't a big selling point for me, but I don't put a book down if it has a road trip in it.

    Nice list!

  20. I feel the same way about zombies! I like The Walking Dead (though I'm a season behind), but that's about as much zombie as I can handle. But I've heard so many good things about Something Strange and Deadly that I might give that zombie book a try at least!

  21. Good point about bullying books. They make me so angry that I just can't read on, or I'll be doing something drastic like tearing the entire book apart or something.
And yep, no thank you to "For fans of Twilight." Just, no.
    Lovely list! (:

  22. This list. It made me laugh, but I think it's because I read it in your voice. For the record, werewolves made my list too. They're just glorified dogs, and I've felt that way since the Twilight Saga which I still love with no shame.

  23. I didn't make a list today, but I totally would have included ghosts, zombies, vampires, angels and werewolves on mine. Like you, there are exceptions to that (Vampire Academy, for example) but overall I'm not interested if it has those words. Clearly we're both not huge fans of paranormals books haha!

  24. WE HAVE SO MUCH IN COMMON, IT IS CRAZY.

Um. Anyway. Yes to all of the above AND the explanations. Except for Road Trips. I do love those when I get in the mood for them. Same with high school contemporaries. I have to get in the right mindset for those.

I'm very much with you on the pets, too. It drives me insane that this is a growing trend in contemporary romances.

  25. I totally agree about the road trip thing! Everyone seems to go crazy for that kind of book, and I've never really understood the appeal.

  26. Lots of paranormal creatures, I see. I get that, a lot of them are so DONE and a lot of them were never really my thing in the first place, either. I was pleased when it seemed like the trend had been moving away from paranormal fiction, more to dystopian and fantasy. I'm with you on high school contemporary and bullying... like I'd want to relive those years and experiences again.

  27. you know, it took me years to read the hunger games because there was a blurb by Stephenie Meyer on the cover. True story. :) I feel your pain. ~daphne

  28. hahahah number 10 :) SO what's left to read if you ignore all of these words? jk jk ;). Totally agree with you on the Zombies!
