Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Ok, so y'all know I am NOT a contemporary person HOWEVER the contemporary books that I do love...well, actually that I OBSESS over all deal with tough subjects. This is one of the many reasons why I love them. So this TTT hosted by The Broke and the Bookish is a great chance for me to showcase the contemporaries that I do love. These are some of my absolute FAVORITE books and I have a few historical fictions in there as well. Enjoy!

Contemporary--Abuse

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover (Review) --I love this book. Obsess. Adore. I couldn't put it down. This books goes places you never anticipate when you start it. So. Good.

Pretty Girl-13 by Liz Coley--JUST finished this, review will be up in a few weeks and it is SO INTENSE. So well written and it totally sucks you in.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher--I don't do well with bullying. I was bullied for almost my entire adolescent and elementary school days so books dealing with this always strike a nerve. I read this in my early 20s and while I was reading it I was thinking, "Finally, somebody gets it." It is just a beautiful book. The writing is brilliant. If you have been bullied or picked on this book will speak to you.

Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews--I read this book in high school because my mom read it when she was younger and loved it. It is ridiculously messed up in content but it is amazing. It's horrifying. Unbelievable. But the strength of survival is beautiful. It's an older book but it is amazing.

Contemporary--Trauma

If I Stay by Gayle Forman (Review)--Uh, yeah, this one needs no introduction. The death of Mia's family is horrifying and something I never want to think about. This book is...this book :)

Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry (Review goes up tomrrow!)--Another contemporary that I never expected to love as much as I did. There is so much more than what meets the eye with this book. It deals with a lot of tough subjects and life experiences. Blew me the eff away. Love.

The Sea of Tranquility (Review)--...yeah...that's all I got. Haha, seriously, one of the best books I've ever read. Go read it if you haven't. Your life is incomplete without it.

Contemporary--Illness

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green--This is one of my top 10 favorite books of life. It changed my life. Changed the way I looked at life. Changed the way I lived my life. It is so poignant and raw that my heart just ached while I read it. All hail, John Green.

Historical Fiction

The Books Thief by Markus Zusak--Again, like John Green, this book changed my life. The narration is so unique and brilliant and beautiful and just GAH! I can't get enough of it. Haunting yet beautiful.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett--As much as this book makes me want to murder almost all humans for their ignorance and lack of acceptance to one another, it is still one of my favorites. Another book that changed the way I look at things because of the difficult, yes true, content.

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys (Review)--Another book I would describe as haunting yet beautiful. This books is literally hard to believe. It deals with such horrific events that you are grateful for waking up in a safe environment every morning. So good.

Can't wait to see all of your Top Ten books this week! Hope I can add some to my TBR pile!! :)

  1. Flowers in the Attic - that's a story that's stayed with me ever since I read it a decade ago. It's one of those stories that I couldn't believe parents would do that to their children... so sad.

Pretty Girl 13 sounds amazing! Great list :)

  4. Oh my God, Flowers in the Attic! I remember reading that in high school and being floored. It may be worthy of a reread, just to see if I was justly traumatized.

  7. I was debating about whether to put Flowers in the Attic in my list. I had a discussion with a friend about it the other day, and was just slightly amazed at the kind of stuff I was allowed to read when I was younger!

    Here's my Top Ten Tuesday.

  8. Between Shades of Gray definitely made my list. Sepetys' writing is so beautiful, I think haunting is a really good descriptor for it. I could not agree more for Hopeless.

  9. I had no idea Pretty Girl 13 is an "issue" book! *adds to TBR*

I'm like you in that if I'm reading a contemporary book, I'm reading one of those sad, heart crushing, tearjerker books about tough topics. I just can't help myself.

  11. Flowers in the Attic... man, that is a creepy one! I've only seen the movie but have been too freaked out to read the book! I actually didn't finish The Help... enjoyed it, but wasn't really driven to finish. I think because I pretty much live in the center of where all that history lives. Not wanting to be reminded of such a dark time in our history. Great topics and even better picks to go with those topics!

And I am just kicking myself for forgetting to include Pushing the Limits. It's a favorite book of mine, but I wasn't thinking of it as a book about tough issues. But it is! I was just so focused on awesome Noah Hutchins!

  19. I've read and loved a number of books on your list, but I have to chime and say OMG LOVED THE AUDIO of The Book Thief. If you ever want to re-read, you seriously need to consider listening to the audio of it. I read it first and then re-read via audio and it made me love the book all the more!
