This book was SUCH a fantastic surprise! I have never previously heard of this book or author but it came as a very thoughtful Christmas present from Betty. I was in a bit of a DNF slump and I wanted something fun and swoony to get me out of a bad book binge. And it totally did! This book was fun, sassy, snarky, and all things swoony.
The book is about Prudence, eldest of four younger sisters, all orphans, all currently suffering at the hands of their beating-happy Grandfather. After a few circumstances and carefully laid deceptions, Prudence sees a way to get out of the house and take her sisters to London with their Grandfather none the wiser. From there, Prudence sets the stage for some hilarious mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and outrageous lies to keep their adorable Great-uncle from finding out their deception and their Grandfather's lack of knowledge about their presence in London.
One of these lies brings her to the Duke of Dinstable and his cousin, Gideon. Gideon and Prue are the stars of our story. And they are SO freaking funny! Gideon reminds me a lot of my beloved Will Herondale from the Infernal Devices because he is just incredibly snarky, clever, and funny. Their banter and dynamic is on fire. Prudence is independent, has been taking care of her sisters for years, and doesn't take any shit. I loved her personality which is as fiery as her red hair. Gideon, notorious rake, is pretty much spellbound by Prue almost immediately.
With that said, the romance between these two is adorable and sweet and ten thousands kinds of swoony. Prudence's sisters are beautiful. Everybody says so. Repeatedly. Constantly. Prue, by comparison, has been told all her life that she is plain and not beautiful. Gideon sees none of this. His constant attention and vocalization to how beautiful he finds her and her demeanor made me swoon so hard. The first time he meets her sisters is one of my favorite scenes. Prue's disbelief at his attention is endearing and I loved every second of her learning to believe in her own inner and outer beauty.
The romance is not the only amazing part of this story. The dynamic between the sisters is so incredibly beautiful. They all love and care for each other so incredibly much that I loved their interactions with one another. The sacrifices Prue makes for them and the defense her sisters come to for her were just fantastic. I love, love, love theses sisters and look forward to reading the rest of their love stories in future books!
