If you've visited this blog before you know I am a HUGE fan of Jay Crownover. I have read and LOVED all of her books so it is no surprise that Better When He's Bold stole my heart. I have been extremely intrigued about Race since Better When He's Bad. This rich boy from the Hill choosing to plunge from grace rather than fall. He's young and pretty and he's trying to rule the underworld that is the Point. There is something very sexy about a pretty rich boy getting his hands dirty. Add in to that mix a driven young woman who has been dealt a shit hand who refuses to give up and we have a fantastic frickin romance.
Ok, so let's talk about Race and Brysen. Race is...okay, the guy is hot as hell. Greek God. Smart. Brysen is an ice queen. She has a horrible home life, she's trying to keep her sister from the worst of the damage (which I LOVE about her), stay on top of her classes, make money, and keep her head above water. She has a lot going on and she refuses to feel bad for herself or break. She is a strong freaking female and I absolutely adored her. She's had a crush on Race for awhile and she knows who he is and what he does and she fights her feelings for a long time. Race is always trying to thaw Brysen out and until a night at a party where shots are fired, she never lets him in. I loved that once Brysen saw that Race wasn't going to hit her and quit her, she really opened up to him. She allowed herself to be vulnerable and while she wants to do everything for herself and not let anyone help her, she finally lets Race help her. Race helps her see that she can trust people and let them help her. She doesn't have to do it all on her own. I get this mentality from Brysen. It's hard to let people in and help you without feeling like you're a failure. Their give and take of what makes them tick and coming together to figure it out is beautiful. I absolutely could not get enough of them together.
The plot is intricate, y'all! Race and Brysen both have shit they are dealing with outside of the obvious problems. Brysen has a stalker who tries to run her over, whaaaaat?! Crazy, scary stuff! Race has somebody going after his business by killing people he's associated with and trying to take over the Point. The fuck? I know. Sucks. So there is the drama and while nobody wants to see their characters suffer, the stalker issue kept me turning the pages. Ya know what else I loved about this book? What didn't happen. What do I mean by that? It would be so easy for Crownover to have the plot and romance both revolve around the obvious morality issue that is Race's business and the point in general and she doesn't take the 'easy' way out. While Brysen coming to terms with Race's work is a point of consideration, it is by no means the main objective of the plot. Love love love this! It would be so easy to have her see saw back and forth about the morality and if she could be with him yadda yadda yadda. But it wasn't that and I loved the book more for it.
The secondary characters of Titus (can't wait for his book), Dovie, Bax, and Karsen, I all loved! Especially Karsen, Brysen's sister. I would love to see a book with her and *coughBookercough* when she is of age. She was a light in the darkness when so much crazy stuff went down and she is wise beyond her years. I would love to read more about her, there is a lot more going on underneath the surface of the other Carter sister.
I loved my time back in the Point and cannot wait for Titus' story!! Eep!
