Goodreads Description
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.
In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .
But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Adrian "Adriaaaaaaaaaaan!!!" Ok sorry, I couldn't NOT do one Rocky reference. Anyways. Adrian is what kept this book alive for me. His charm, wit and utter devotion to Sydney is not only endearing it is heart-warming. He has grown so much as a character and his arc is incredible. The direction his story goes was surprising to say the least, and I really liked it. I loved that he started to look at his life and choices and do something positive about them. He is an incredibly strong and driven man and it melted my heart to have him start seeing some of his own worth. I have a feeling this is only the beginning and he is only going to continue to surprise us and grow as a character.
The Ending The ending didn't save the entire book but it made me want to read the next one.
The Story Not gonna lie, this book didn't really do it for me. I LOVE The Vampire Academy. I think Bloodlines started off really strong. This installment bored me though. There was no excitement for me. I wasn't racing to turn the pages. I liked the general idea of the plot and where it went but it was still meh to me. I don't know, you guys! I feel like I'm missing something but I was bored when I was reading!
Sydney I loved Sydney. I loved her inner dialogue and her struggle to accept everything she was taught to hate. But that was before. This book--ugh. She annoyed me so much! I understand her need to keep a low profile and play it cool but I just couldn't stand her entire lack of emotions for the whole book. Even when she was around Adrian I never got her passion or her feelings for him. I felt like she was just talking and phoning it in. It was just the vibe I got and every chapter of hers I read I wanted to roll my eyes at some point. She was irritating. And her constant need to basically bow down to her YOUNGER sister who she was in charge of grated on my nerves. Calm down, little one. Let your sister have a freakin' life. OH OH OH! And how Sydney refused to EVER defend their mother to her own sister and father made me sick. Her mother was clearly an amazing and kind person and she never said one word to stand up for her. Excuse my language, but fuck that shit. Sorry not sorry.
The Romance It kills me to say this because I think Richelle Mead writes an amazing love story *coughRoseandDimitricough* but this continues to fall flat for me. I was rooting for them in previous books but I'm just not feeling their romance. I think Adrian feels a lot more than Sydney does. I think he would sacrifice for her in a second and she would not reciprocate. I just don't feel the feels for these two. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't feel it.

Standing in Line Outside
If you already love the series, go for it. If you haven't started it, it doesn't really compare to the Vampire Academy at all in regards to feels and content in my humble opinion. I'll finish out the series but I'll be borrowing the books rather than buying them.
I cant really write a good comment for this because I'm still trying to process the book, I loved it, as I do the others. I will say this though, not only is it 10pm in London, UK , but my daughter is also asleep in the room opposite to where I'm sitting and I just had to really stop myself from bursting out laughing at your Rocky impression. Well done :P.
ReplyDeleteAdrian is.... well he's just Adrian. That makes him god like. But of course not Dimitri god like.
As much as I love these books and the story line, he is also what carries it for me. I don't think I would be as hooked if they didn't have a character like him. And you're right, Sydney does feel less and at times doesn't appreciate him enough. Loving Sydney for Adrian feels like second nature, it just comes that naturally to him. But for her its almost like she has to work at it and that's not what love or affection is.
Anyway, great review. And thanks for bring a little bit of laughter to my night.
Also, you have a new follower in me on both blogloving and twitter :)
I love love love this series. I cannot get enough of this couple and I cannot wait till July so that I can read the fifth book in the series. I have to say that this book did it for me. To see their love blossom and change and grow and to see how Sydney has come into her own and has now found the love that she didn't think she's capable of having for a vampire I am happy to see where this is going. Now the plot of the story wasn't that great I have to admit, but everything else stellar. I really disliked Sydney's sister from the beginning. She really got on my nerves and I hope she gets her just dues in the next book. I also love Jill and Eddie and I hope that they come into their own with their relationship. I think I might be a bit biased because I love this couple but this book was amazing for me and I was so upset to see it end. I had so many feelings at the end of this book. Too many feelings that I may need to re-read it again before the next book comes out because I just need to have them in my life.
ReplyDeleteI felt that this book was a bit of a letdown too. You are not the only one that got bored. I was so excited for Sydrian but after 400 pages of relationship woes, I got tired of it. I needed more action. And to be honest, I love Adrian, but I love the snarky Adrian, not just the sensitive one. I hate to say it but he's kind of turning into a bore.
