“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
“I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren't all that different.”
“I am selfish. I am brave.”
“You think my first instinct is to protect you. Because you're small, or a girl, or a Stiff. But you're wrong."
"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press." he says, his fingers squeezing at the word break. My body tenses at the edge in his voice, so I am coiled as tight as a spring, and I forget to breathe.
His dark eyes lifting to mine, he adds, "But I resist it."
"Why..." I swallow hard. "Why is that your first instinct?"
"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I've seen it. It's fascinating." He releases me but doesn't pull away, his hand grazing my jaw, my neck. "Sometimes I just want to see it again. Want to see you awake.”
I love love love this book and though I won't be seeing the movie till next week just so I can go alone and not have my bf talk smack in my ears about how wack this movie is. I am so excited. I don't think I will be able to read this again before the movie but I do remember a lot of it. If I don't then I'll definitely try to skim it next week before I go and see the movie.
ReplyDeleteLOVED Divergent. Did you see the movie yet?? because omg I loved it and thought it was amazing! and THEO JAMES SERIOUSLY. I toned down the flailing for fiance's sake but I'm seeing it again with a friend this week so I'm all prepared for massive drooling over him. haha. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso I love that line -- fear doesn't shut you down, it wakes you up. It also makes me think of one of their interviews when she accidentally says fear doesn't shut you down, it turns you on. haha
