Flashback Friday--Divergent by Veronica Roth

Flashback Friday hosted by Fiction Fare and Swoony Boys Podcast

So, is it too totally obvious to do Divergent this week? I mean, hello! The movie opens up today! I can't wait to see it because, uh, Theo James...HELLO SIR! Ok, anyways so I read Divergent pre-blogging. I was totally in the in-crowd on this book without realizing what a huge book this was in the blog world. Go me. I seriously love this book so hard. I love it almost as much as The Hunger Games--the first book not the series as a whole. The Hunger Games will always win, hands down. But I digress. I love Divergent. I love Tris and Four and their relationship. I love the plot and how the factions function or the lack thereof function. I LOVE the theme of bravery and standing up not only for what you believe in but for those unable to stand up for themselves. Courage. Strength. Bravery. I love it all. I think this is the beginning of a phenomenal series, regardless of my feelings about the final book. I'm not sure if there is a human in the book world that hasn't read this book but JUST IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T, read Divergent...read Insurgent...then just stop. :)

Favorite Quotes

“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”

“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”

“I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren't all that different.”

“I am selfish. I am brave.”

“You think my first instinct is to protect you. Because you're small, or a girl, or a Stiff. But you're wrong."
"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press." he says, his fingers squeezing at the word break. My body tenses at the edge in his voice, so I am coiled as tight as a spring, and I forget to breathe.

His dark eyes lifting to mine, he adds, "But I resist it."

"Why..." I swallow hard. "Why is that your first instinct?"

"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I've seen it. It's fascinating." He releases me but doesn't pull away, his hand grazing my jaw, my neck. "Sometimes I just want to see it again. Want to see you awake.”

  1. I love love love this book and though I won't be seeing the movie till next week just so I can go alone and not have my bf talk smack in my ears about how wack this movie is. I am so excited. I don't think I will be able to read this again before the movie but I do remember a lot of it. If I don't then I'll definitely try to skim it next week before I go and see the movie.

  2. LOVED Divergent. Did you see the movie yet?? because omg I loved it and thought it was amazing! and THEO JAMES SERIOUSLY. I toned down the flailing for fiance's sake but I'm seeing it again with a friend this week so I'm all prepared for massive drooling over him. haha. :)

Also I love that line -- fear doesn't shut you down, it wakes you up. It also makes me think of one of their interviews when she accidentally says fear doesn't shut you down, it turns you on. haha
