Just Your Neighborhood Tinderella

"But when no answer comes for the remainder of the night, I change back into my pj's. Switch from coffee to wine. It calms the crazy and lulls me back to sanity. Back to what I know, anyway.
Back to the only things I can count on."

My Thoughts

The Belle When I got the email pitching Mr. Right-Swipe I was immediately intrigued. I read the synopsis and I thought to myself, this is a book you have to read. Why? Because as we all know, I have lived the trials of online dating and set-ups and let me tell all you married or longterm relationship people out there, it is ugly. Not just physically but proverbially as well. When the tagline of the description is 'for everyone who's had a bad date' I knew I was hooked.

And hooked I was. I read this in one sitting because it was so easy to fall into Rachel's--Rae's--story and I kept laughing my ass off I didn't want to put it down. Rachel is 34, single, a first grade teacher, an aspiring erotica novelist, and beautiful mass of cynical wondefulness. I adored her. She was the perfect amount of just-over-the-line cynical about love and dating. This is something I could obviously relate to. She's over dating and men in general, her two best friends are married and about-to-be married respectively so they strike a bargain. After a terrible blind date set up by one of them they decide to make her an online dating profile and they'll have a say in who she goes out with to 'help' her. Rae thinks she'll be proven right in the world of dating but what's she got to lose?

Schultz is a kindred spirit in that she writes the world of online dating and finding love after 29 in the most articulate and honest way. She nails the trials and tribulations that are online dating. I could be here all day including excerpts from this book detailing what I mean but, honestly, you just have to read it. It's hilarious. She touches on ghosting, douchebags, the token profile pictures, the serial online daters, almost anything you can think of she covers with brilliant snark. I was crying laughing multiple times throughout my reading experience.

But it's not just about the laughs. The friendships between Rae, Val, and Quinn are a huge part of the book. I loved reading their dynamic even if it pissed me off sometimes. While none of my close married friends are like this, Val and Quinn were the quintessential know-it-all, self righteous, I lose who I am and my sense of self because now I'm part of a pair married or non-single women I've encountered and boy, did they tick me off at times. There is a very honest resolution to this conflict and I was really impressed with how it was handled by Schultz.

This was such a fun and easy read with a perfect combination of laughs and real emotion. A perfect beach or staycation read and I have to agree with description when I say if you have ever had a bad date, if you're over online dating, if you're the single friend, this book is most definitely 100% for you!

Backstage Pass
If you love slightly cynical heroines, dating woes, and are the single friend...this book is for you.
