A Heart That Grew Three Sizes One Day

"...she didn't mind being the prey.
If she were being honest, she preferred it.
Day in and day out, she was the one in control, the one holding people's lives in her hands.
But in bed...she submitted."

Goodreads Description

From the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary...

Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan's black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.

When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.

Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he's ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child...
If you've been following my reviews of this series, you know that I've been waiting for D's book since the very first book of the series. Since the first time Derek Pratt was introduced as part of Morgan's Mercenaries I knew he was mine. He would be my favorite and that hadn't changed for the last six books. I was not disappointed.

Derek Pratt is known for being unfeeling, not caring, and being an overall badass super solider. Sofia is the team doctor and after treating Liam, D finds himself alone with Sofia and...bow chicka wow wow. While D, as he does, walks away, he still continues to think about Sofia and Sofia...well she has to think about him not only because he gave her the best sex of her life but because she gets pregnant. Sofia goes to tell D and in the midst of all this, Sully is still missing and D goes out to find him after getting a lead from one of his informants and Sofia gets whisked into this situation.

The political component of this story is, as usual, on point. Because of D's personality and lack of emotions, the outside threat seemed to overshadow the romance just a tinch. It's not a bad thing by any means and it makes sense because it would not be realistic and it would have pissed me off if D all the sudden was all mushy over somebody. With that said, the moment we get of D being vulnerable and Sofia tearing down his walls were EPIC. I LOVE him so hard. His past is...*shudder*. It is awful and painful and NOT what I expected at all.

Sofia is f'ing badass. She takes zero shit from Derek and forces him to acknowledge a lot of stuff he doesn't want to. And it wasn't in a nagging or annoying way. A lot of time females in books will push at the wrong time or say the dumbest shit and make it about them and Sofia does none of this. I love her so hard, too. She gives Derek a fantastic balance of pushing and letting him open up.

Now let's talk about D for a moment. His moment of vulnerability broke...my FUCKING...heart. Holy hell, guys. It was so fucking endearing and heartbreaking. I wanted to snug the shit out of him so hard. I loved that it wasn't a quick fix, too. I had zero doubts that Elle Kennedy would do us right and she so totally does. It's a difficult journey and he doesn't want to change, or feel, or start changing his whole life. I love how realistic it felt without being eye-roll inducing of back and forth and back and forth.

The surrounding plot with Sullivan and the boys was equally entertaining. Kennedy sure as hell is setting up some future stories and I cannot WAIT to see who the next book will be. I have a feeling of who it might be but I'm also crossing all fingers and toes that a certain rookie and barely legal blondie will be making an appearance VERY SOON!! Please, Elle? PRETTY PLEASE!!

Backstage Pass
If you love broody males, badass females, and inner pain...this book is for you.
