The Hero
We met Grimm in the first book of the series, Beyond the Highland Mist, and I really liked him. He played his part in brining Hawk and Adrienne together with his clandestine falling star wishes and when he thought Adrienne was lost to them he made it his mission to find another star to wish her back...*sigh*...this is when Grimm really caught my attention. What kind of man does that for his friend? A great one. However, 'great man' would never be a describing trait if you asked Grimm himself. Because of things that happened in his past and who he is today, he is full of self-hate and self-doubt. But when he is summoned back to the place that took him in after tragedy, he cannot refuse. What I liked about Grimm was the part he hated most about himself--the Berserker side. Call me a cavewoman but his instincts to protect Jillian and innocents all around melted my heart. While he sees himself as a beast, and we all know I love those, he was always honorable and did the right thing. This juxtaposition had my heart racing...
The Heroine
...as well as Jillian's. Jillian is the daughter of the laird who took in Grimm when he was 16. She found Grimm in the woods, *swoon*, and has loved him ever since, rarely taking his continued rebuffs for his affection to heart. I both liked and disliked this. I get I'm reading a book and I can *know* that Grimm really does have feelings for her but there's a part of me that also can't help but roll my eyes at the desperateness of it. Did he have feelings for her all along and did she need to be the one to push for it to happen? Yes. Without a doubt, Grimm wouldn't have gotten there without her being the one to pursue him, however this really isn't my favorite formula for a couple getting together. I do love some digging through the angst into the heart of the beast, duh, but Jillian was almost over the top about it. I did like though when this quality came into play later on the story after some sparks have already flown. When he doesn't believe she could love him as he is and she pretty much shuts his ass down about it. That I like. So it was a give and take with overall me feeling pretty good about it.
The Legends
The story of the Berserkers played a big part in our story and I liked how the legend played out. The addition of Grimm's da and uncle later on really made me enjoy this aspect of the story because we got to hear about the history and family ties, etc.
