Goodreads Description
Some things are sexier the second time around.
Cal Payton has gruff and grumbly down to an art...all the better for keeping people away. And it usually works. Until Jenna MacMillan-his biggest mistake---walks into Payton and Sons mechanic shop all grown up, looking like sunshine, and inspiring more than a few dirty thoughts.
Jenna was sure she was long over the boy she'd once loved with reckless abandon, but one look at the steel-eyed Cal Payton has her falling apart all over again. Ten years may have passed, but the pull is stronger than ever... and this Cal is all man.
Cal may have no intention of letting Jenna in, but she's always been his light, and it's getting harder to stay all alone in the dark. When a surprise from the past changes everything, Cal and Jenna must decide if their connection should be left alone or if it's exactly what they need for the future of their dreams.

Oh, my gosh. I am in a serious love affair with Megan Erickson and her books and I just can't stop, won't stop. After binge reading her Gamers series I jumped right into Mechanics of Love and oh boy, was this a story where all the parts had to fit together before things started working smoothly. The problem? Cal and Jenna had an intense relationship as teenagers and an unfortunate event led to her breaking up with him and leaving her hometown for college and is now back after 10 years away. Neither have really moved on since then and when they meet again their unholy hot chemistry is back in full force.
I won't lie, I'm not a huge fan of second chance romances but this one sold me. They never had good closure and the glimpses into the memories of Cal and Jenna and what they shared 10 years ago totally and my heart in a pitter patter stutter. I never had a teenage romance like that. Where you feel like you can conquer the world. This book made me feel that. I loved their past and how neither got over the other but not in a melodramatic way. Their past gave them a depth that I loved and it didn't annoy me as most second chance romances do.
Jenna and Cal in present day are red hot. Cal is a sexy and stubborn mule and I loved every second of his gruff demeanor. I loved Jenna's fire and strength. She pushed Cal's buttons in all the right ways in order to help him see what kind of man he really is. He isn't just the stubborn bear he thinks he is...and accurately is but ya know, he's not like that ALL the time, hehe. Cal is who he is and says what he means but he is so much more than what he shows the world. He is stubborn and set in his ways and rough BUT he has so much love that he gives that he doesn't even realize. He basically raised his brothers since the time he was six and doesn't want a family...or so he thinks. The way this plot plays out is about a million kinds of adorable and I love, love, loved how Cal responds to this and how Jenna reacts and am in freaking love with the development that arrives. No spoilers here so I have to be vague but I was all kinds of hearts in eyes about it. And Jenna is the perfect complement to Cal's lack of self-awareness.
I loved Jenna and Cal's relationship and how fucking swoony they were together. Their courtship is a slow-burn back to the present and I loved every second of the flame igniting. The rest of the Payton family is just as endearing though so I'm really excited to see more of them, especially Brent...le sigh...

I really enjoyed this book. I love this series in general. Megan's writing gets better and better with each new book she publishes! My favorite so far is Dirty Deeds, though. I just love Alex!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to binge read this series, starting with this book! I'm a fan of Megan and her stories, and I can't wait to meet the rest of the Paytons ;) So thrilled you loved this one; makes me pretty confident that I'll love it too!
