With the movie coming out shortly I just HAD to pay homage to one of the best books I have ever read. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. OBVI! I read Looking For Alaska just before this and that had been my first John Green book. After finishing that and loving it I decided to read his newest book...oh, I had NO idea what I was in for. I read the description of the book and checked it out from the library prior to going on vacation and was all, 'hey, this should be a good book to keep my attention at the pool. I hope it's as good as Looking for Alaska.' This is when I promptly face-palm myself.
I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW FREAKING AMAZING THIS BOOK WOULD BE. I know I've told this story when bringing up this book in various Top Ten Tuesdays but I'll tell it again. So, I go to Florida with my family on vacation. I had broken my hip a month before so I was on crutches--this comes into play later--and we decided to spend a day at the pool. It's hard for me to get around so I bring everything I need to sit and bake for the next several hours including THE BOOK. So I'm laying out and I decide to start reading...and I kept reading...and kept reading...and kept reading until there was no more book to be read. I read that entire book in literally one sitting because Lord knows I couldn't move anywhere else and sobbed...in public...poolside...on and off for a couple of hours. I may have had my sunglasses on but that did not deter the strangers around me from knowing what was going on underneath. They had absolutely no idea how much emotional agony and turmoil my poor bookish heart and soul was going through. It was one of those ugly cries that you physically couldn't even stop. The tears were just rolling down my face with no shame. And then...AND THEN after shutting the book, my fractured ass gimps back up to the room, still crying, while struggling to move on crutches. This my friends is the picture of pathetic.
I love this book something fierce and think it is one of the greatest more poignant and heartfelt stories ever told. It rips a piece of your soul out, kicks your ass, and takes your name. And it would do it again if given the chance. If you have not read this book, I urge you to do so with minimal expectations. I went into it knowing nothing and came out a changed person. If this book clicks with you, it will change you. It also doesn't hurt that the title is based on my favorite Shakespeare quote OF ALL TIME!
That is all.
I hope the movie doesn't fuck up this book.
You all know how I feel about books being made into movies...

I cannot wait for this movie. Though I promised my students to take them to see it because they also read it with me, I think I might see it before them and just pretend that I am seeing it for the first time when I take them to see it. I really hope that they stuck to the story and didn't try to make it all glitzy and shit because that would be totally fucked up. But I cannot wait.. Just 2 more days and its here.. AHHH
ReplyDeleteSo if you ever do a reread of this book, I HIGHLY recommend you listen to the audio. Not sure if you are an audiobook person, but it is one of the best audiobooks I've listened too. Hazel and Augustus really shine.
ReplyDeleteLove this one to pieces.
