I totally had a Colleen Hoover weekend last week...end...Anyways. So I read Maybe Someday (review to come!) and then I just HAD to binge read the entire Slammed series. I LOVED it! I wish I had read it sooner. For some reason the synopsis didn't jump out to me but after Maybe Someday and basically being obsessed with Hopeless, I was all I have to read her other series. It's a must. I loved Layken. I loved Will--SO MUCH! I loved the secondary characters and the friendships that are cultivated. I had NO idea what the main drama was going into it. I was clueless about the plot and I was SHOCKED where it went! Like, oh my gosh! So I wanted to highlight Slammed for this week's Flashback Friday because I didn't really want to write a formal review on the whole series so here's my mini-review of Slammed.
The writing is emotional and heartfelt. The relationships are what MAKE this book for me. The relationship Layken has with her mom is amazing and beautiful and I loved their interactions. The sibling bond between Layken and Kel is hilarious. Will and Caulder make my life with how much he loves and protects him. And while Layken and Will definitely bring the heat, the friendship between Kel and Caulder stole the show for me. I loved these two boys. So much I want them for my own brothers. They are kind and hilarious and astute. The entire series I could not get enough of them! They are so adorable! I wanna be friends with 10 year old...totally normal. Really. The relationships are where it's at in this book.
I also was clueless about slam poetry. I thought this aspect was beautiful and could just feel the emotions of these characters oozing off the pages when they wrote a poem or did a slam. I thought this was a really creative and beautiful way for the characters to express their emotions. I need to YouTube slam poetry to see it live. Very cool passion that Will has that I loved being exposed to.
If you love character-driven books with a moderate amount of melodrama this is a book for you. If you love Colleen Hoover, don't delay and read these. But also read Hopeless...definitely read Hopeless :)
